RATIONALE
Route 1 - Persistence of Memory
This route is an introspective exploration into the difficulty of coming to terms with memories of war. It poses the question ‘How can I rebuild after such trauma?’ and expresses how, in spite of solitude and silence, the protagonist cannot let go of his past. It is this focus on the past and use of repetition that gives Route 1 a sense of echoing inescapability, which reflects the protagonist’s battle with PTSD. There is a juxtaposition between the burning of his past, and the icy cold of his peacetime surroundings.
Route 2 - Struggle for Peace
This route explores the idea that, while peace has been declared, the war is far from over. In every waking thought, the protagonist battles on against his memories, and against the silence that allows his memories to run amok. While this route is introspective, it relies more on the oppressive calmness of his environment to paint a picture of his internal struggle. It frames him as a soldier who cannot escape his role, and sees unending conflict everywhere.
